Hunger Study / Local StatsThe average monthly income of the people we serve is $840, and 70% had incomes below the official federal poverty level. 53% of those surveyed have someone in their family who is working. A major issue facing many Miami Valley families is food insecurity which the US Department of Agriculture describes as: "lacking access, at all times, to enough food for a healthy life for all members of the household." 84% of clients served are food insecure, including 86% of children. Eight out of ten children participate in the federal school lunch program and six out of ten take part in the federal school breakfast program. Of our network food pantries who participated in this study, 79% reported they are serving more clients today than they did in 2001. On average 221 bags or boxes of food are distributed each week at each food pantry. 62% of local food kitchens indicated they serve more children in the summer months. Our network partners say The Foodbank plays a critical role in providing the food they serve. 96% said elimination of support from The Foodbank would have a devastating impact on their operations. |
