National Association of Letter Carriers Sponsers "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive May 9

Dayton, May 5, 2009 – On Saturday, May 9, members of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will be collecting non-perishable food items as part of the 2009

“Stamp Out Hunger” Campaign.“Stamp Out Hunger” started in 1992, and is the largest single day food drive in the nation. In 2008, over 70 million pounds of food were collected across the United States. Locally, The Foodbank received over 130,000 pounds of food last year to donate to the hungry in Montgomery, Greene, and Preble counties. ‘“Stamp Out Hunger” has a huge impact on our local efforts to feed the hungry,” says Burma Rai, The Foodbank CEO. “At a time when our resources are stretched and the need for food continues to rise, this food drive is a much needed boost. With continued lay-offs, the increased cost of food and summer break from school, community food drives are more important than ever.

Participating in “Stamp Out Hunger” is easy. Residents just need to leave a bag or box of non-perishable food items either in or near their mailbox before mail delivery on May 9. The letter carrier will pick up the donation, and it will be delivered to The Foodbank. If a donation is not picked up, residents are encouraged to either contact their local post office that day, or to drop the donation off at their local branch lobby. Barrels will be in the lobbies of local post offices the week of May 4, as well as in 5 area Kroger stores. Food items collected will then be used to feed the hungry in Montgomery, Greene, and Preble counties through The Foodbank’s 104 partner agency programs.
